“Enriching Education through the VR & AR Landscape: An Erasmus+ Mobility Experience in Berlin”

Introduction: On the 23rd of May, five BFEI teachers embarked on an Erasmus+ mobility to Berlin. The aim was to explore where the realms of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) converge with education and cultural experiences. We had the privilege of exploring the innovative work of Sustanium Research Institute, experiencing immersive VR simulations, and immersing ourselves in the rich history and vibrant art scene of the city.

Day 1: Exploring VR & AR Projects at Sustanium Research Institute: On the first day of our visit, after arriving in Berlin and settling in our hotel located in Hackescher Markt, we embarked on an enlightening journey to the Sustanium Research Institute. There, we were introduced to our knowledgeable hosts, Jorg, Benjamin, and Lisa. They provided us with an overview of the institute's projects, notably the revolutionary "Mix-Tec" initiative, which focuses on implementing Mixed Technologies - VR/AR for small and medium-sized businesses. Additionally, we learned about the interesting "VR REPAIR" project, which utilizes Mixed Reality for vocational training in collaboration with the TECC Centre of Siemens Energy Global and the Berlin University of Applied Sciences.

Day 2: Unveiling the Power of VR at the Berlin TV Tower: The second day was filled with inspiring experiences. Our first stop was the iconic Berlin TV Tower, where we had the opportunity to delve into the "History of Berlin" through a captivating VR simulation. This immersive experience transported us to significant moments in the city's past, allowing us to witness historical events first-hand. From the Berlin Wall to the rise and fall of the city's architecture, the VR simulation brought the past to life and enriched our understanding of Berlin's rich heritage.

We attended a thought-provoking presentation that shed light on the challenges faced in developing VR content. The session provided valuable insights into the complexities of designing and creating immersive training simulations, such as the one we experienced at Siemens Energy. We learned about the importance of user experience, interactive design, and the role of technology in shaping the future of education and training.

Day 3: Immersion in Berlin's Cultural Tapestry While our journey revolved around VR and AR, we also had the pleasure of engaging in cultural activities that showcased Berlin's vibrant artistic and historical landscape. We visited various art museums, allowing us to appreciate the diverse artistic expressions found in the city. Moreover, a visit to the East Side Gallery provided a glimpse into the powerful murals and messages that adorned the remnants of the Berlin Wall. To gain deeper insights into Germany's complex history, we explored the Stasi Museum, which illuminated the operations and impact of the infamous Stasi secret police.

Conclusion: Empowered by Knowledge and Enriched by Experiences Our Erasmus+ visit to Berlin was an immersive journey that expanded our horizons in VR and AR technologies, education, and cultural appreciation. Through our interactions at Sustanium Research Institute, we gained valuable knowledge about the applications of VR and AR in various industries, particularly in education and vocational training. We witnessed first-hand the power of VR simulations in delivering engaging learning experiences and enhancing understanding. Furthermore, our cultural activities exposed us to Berlin's vibrant art scene and historical significance, fostering a deeper connection to the city's past and its people.

As we bid farewell to Berlin, we carry with us new knowledge and a deeper appreciation for the potential of VR and AR in education. Our time at Sustanium Research Institute exposed us to cutting-edge projects like "Mix-Tec" and "VR REPAIR," showcasing real-world applications of these technologies. From exploring art museums and the East Side Gallery to immersive journeys through Berlin's history, we embraced the city's vibrant culture while forging lasting bonds with fellow participants. This Erasmus+ mobility experience was a holistic blend of learning, fun, and camaraderie that inspired us to think beyond boundaries, nurture our passion for education and technology, and shape the future of immersive learning.
